Antibiotic. Inhibits cell growth by complexing with DNA and interfering with RNA synthesis. At high dose of 2 μg/ml, it inhibits the transcription of all RNA species.

At a lower dose of 40 ng/ml it inhibits the synthesis of rRNA. Used in cell culture as a selection agent.
